So much of the gameвЂ™s appeal then involved the physical experience of being in a room with friends (or brothers, in my case) - the laughing and taunting and gloating as you blew each other up over and over again deep into the night. That said, there was a tinge of sadness to my brief time with вЂњGoldenEye: Source.вЂќ After all, my original multiplayer memories of вЂњGoldenEyeвЂќ come from a time when split-screen was all the rage, partly because broadband Internet hadnвЂ™t fully penetrated and low-latency online gaming hadnвЂ™t gone mainstream. If I had worked at Rare back then, I wouldnвЂ™t be able to imagine a more stirring tribute. вЂњGoldenEye: SourceвЂќ is a testament to gaming obsession at its best, especially when you think about the effort it took to pull this off, the years of sweat that went into it. ItвЂ™s strange, of course, playing with a mouse and keyboard and at such a higher frame rate than the N64вЂ™s processors could output, but itвЂ™s the same basic product. So much of what made the original game memorable is there: the weapons, the characters, the levels. вЂњItвЂ™s like revisiting my childhood all over again,вЂќ said a teammate over the voice-chat channel during one of my games. For some reason a long, snowy stretch featuring a guard tower packed a particular punch: I feel like it might have been a place where I died over and over in the single-player version. I jumped in for a bit - I fared quite poorly - and instantly remembered various levels from the game.

Technically, this mod has been in existence for a while. A group of modders has transported a bunch of the gameвЂ™s levels into the more modern Source engine (which powers вЂњHalf-Life 2вЂќ and its pseudo sequels, as well as a bunch of other recent games) to create a free multiplayer experience they have dubbed вЂњGoldenEye: Source.вЂќ (ThereвЂ™s no single-player, sadly.) Give Goldeneye Source and the 1964 emulator a try, they are both great ways to play Goldeneye on a modern PC.Now the game has made an unlikely comeback. This is definitely my recommended way to play Goldeneye single-player now. The game is still the original Goldeneye (you must find the game separately from the emulator), but it plays so smoothly. And it does a beautiful wide-screen mode for modern monitors and laptop screens.

1964 instead gives you incredible mouse and keyboard support, just like you would expect for a modern PC first person shooter. Its free to download and it features 25 recreated maps, 10 different multiplayer modes, and redesigned versions of the original games 28.

Typically with an emulator, you have to settle for a glitchy experience, with awkward controls and graphics at a weird resolution. Much of its success was attributed to the fast free roam movement and the split screen multiplayer, both relatively unheard of at the time. This is an emulator specifically designed for playing the original Goldeneye and Perfect Dark games on a PC. If you are craving the great single player Goldeneye, look no further than the 1964 Emulator. Goldeneye 64 in the 1964 Emulator (GREAT Single Player option) Online multiplayer is great, and it is so nice to have a full screen to yourself rather than have people cheating in split screen mode seeing your screen on the TV. And the game is free! You just have to have the Source Engine on your computer, which comes with games like Counter Strike and Half Life 2. This game is a lot of fun, with fast paced action just like in the original. The maps are excellent remakes of the originals, plus some new maps that weren't in the original's multiplayer mode.

A lot of hard work went into Goldeneye Source. You can tell right away that it is a Source game, but it really feels like Goldeneye 64 too, with the weird controls and weapons. Goldeneye Source is an excellent fan-made game that remakes Goldeneye 64's multiplayer using Valve's Source Engine.
